Spa Scotta owner Jessica Campbell purchased the business from is founder Scotta Ashcraft, now a leasing director at Cushman & Wakefield, in 2006. Campbell was the first employee Ashcraft hired when her new spa needed an esthetician in 1998. When Ashcraft wanted to sell her business, Campbell was the perfect potential buyer. She knew the business inside and out, so the spa would stay in the family, so to speak. The transition went smoothly for both the original owners and the staff.

Now in its 12th year of business, Ashcraft’s original vision has continued to grow and expand. Campbell describes the environment she maintains at Spa Scotta as “an unpretentious day spa with a truly committed and educated staff.” When the spa opened, they offered basic services such as massages, facials, waxing and nail care. “Our motto was to do what we did well,” Campbell said. “We grew our service menu slowly over the years as we became more educated in different services and as the staff has pursued new skills. Our motto is still the same, though.” Spa Scotta’s services now include advanced skin therapies such as microdermabrasian, ultrasonic exfoliation and IPS illuminating peels; lash extensions; lash and brow tinting; and spray tanning services.

The services offered at Spa Scotta cater to wide variety of clients, including pregnant women as well as teen and tween girls. “We create new services and programs in response to client demand and employee input. We have always had a sizeable number of pregnant clients so gearing services for them was a natural move,” Campbell said. The hormonal changes women experience during pregnancy can cause increased acne, dryness or changes in skin tone. Spa Scotta uses the Belli skin care line – created especially to handle the changes in a woman’s skin during pregnancy – during their pregnancy facials. The spa uses Belli’s Elasticity Belly Oil during pregnancy massages to aid stretching skin rebuild its elasticity.

For teens and tweens, Spa Scotta offers services like the “edu-facial” which educates young girls about good skin care regimens, mini manicures and pedicures, mini massages, ear piercing and make-up lessons. “The teen/tween services came out of our own personal experiences with the spa industry when we were young and the number of younger clients we were seeing,” Campbell said. “Young clients have different challenges than adults. We wanted to address them appropriately.”

While younger clients can get lessons in make-up application, Spa Scotta is just beginning to expand its make-up services to adult clients. “I am really excited about our make-up team,” Campbell said. “I get inspired every time I see one of their clients after a make-up application. Our artists take what is beautiful about the client and make that shine.” Spa Scotta’s make-up artists also offer their services off-site, which is especially convenient for brides who would rather spend their wedding day relaxing instead of running around to make multiple beauty appointments.

Whether off-site at a wedding or on-site at the spa, Spa Scotta’s expert staff strives to make its clients as comfortable as possible. The spa offers several packages for a day of pampering. According to Campbell, the most popular is The Five Star – five hours of treatments including an hour-long massage, basic facial, manicure, pedicure and a boxed lunch for $325.

All of the beauty lines used at Spa Scotta can be purchased at the spa or online through its website, including the Sweet Beauty line created exclusively for the spa’s use in its manicure and pedicure services and the spa’s own line of vanilla-ginger scented body wash and lotions. Spa Scotta also offers gift certificates.

Spa Scotta has changed and expanded its services in order to grow with the interests of its staff, and now the spa offers that opportunity to other beauty providers. The spa has opened what Campbell calls “The Finishing School,” which offers “post-graduate education for beauty providers.” Campbell hopes that The Finishing School at Spa Scotta will grow in 2010 and inspire other beauty providers to keep expanding their skill sets and beauty interests.

Spa Scotta is located in the University District at 4915 25th Ave NE, Ste. 103 West, across from the University Village shopping center. Appointments can be made by calling (206) 522-5800. The spa menu is available online at www.spascotta.com.

Old School Pin-Ups Brings Retro Glam to Seattle Brides

Trixie Lane and Lance Wagner have devoted their lives to recreating classic mid-century beauty. As a hair and makeup artist, Lane specializes in the hairstyles of the 1940s, 50s and 60s while Wagner, after working in a variety of photographic styles, found that the kind of shoots he most enjoyed were emulations of classic pin-up photography. Since 2002, Lane and Wagner have been shooting pin-ups together and, after moving their studio to a mid-century schoolhouse in Lake City, formed Old School Pin-Ups.

Old School Pin-Ups combines Lane and Wagner’s love of mid-century culture with their ample talents as a stylist-photographer team. Located in the Kindergarten room of the Paul Thiry-designed schoolhouse, Lance and Wagner have created a retro paradise with four permanent sets on which they shoot pin-up photography sessions. From a swinging bachelor pad, to an exotic Oriental bar, to a pink boudoir, to a kitschy tiki room, the standing sets allow clients to live out their own mid-century fantasies.

Wagner believes the standing sets provide a unique experience for both client and photographer. In other studios, like the one Wagner used to share with another photographer in Pioneer Square, props, backdrops and other set pieces must be moved in and out for every shoot. “Here we were able to build the sets that we wanted to build and leave them up,” Wagner said, “like a television set.”

When clients enter the Kindergarten room, they are immediately transported into the world of retro glamour and the lifestyle Lane and Wagner are so fond of. In addition to shooting on Wagner’s high-quality sets, clients also get the benefit of Lane’s styling skills. According to Wagner, the women who book shoots at Old School Pin-Ups are treated to “a spa-like, pampering experience” which includes retro hairstyling, makeup, wardrobe from Lane’s costume closet and refreshments.

The prevailing theory behind Old School Pin-Ups is that absolutely any woman can be one. Lane and Wagner enjoy helping their clients transform into iconic pin-up girls from the WWII era. Seattle has a vibrant burlesque, cabaret and rockabilly scene, filled with potential clients who already enjoy mid-century culture, but most of Lane and Wagner’s clients don’t come from that world. In fact, Wagner estimates that 60 to 70 percent of the business at Old School Pin-Ups comes from the wedding industry – a market they fell into purely by happenstance.

According to Lane, Old School Pin-Ups’ first bridal pin-up experience came when one of Lane’s friends came to her with a vintage wedding gown she had restored and wanted to have photos in for her own wedding. Lane did her friend’s hair and makeup for her bridal portraits, shot by Wagner. Seattle Bride Magazine featured the photos, and a new market for pin-up photography was born.

“The wedding market just popped up because our product worked so well as the perfect groom’s gift,” Wagner said. “And [pin-ups] never go out of style like a regular boudoir photo. I think that’s a major advantage we have over people who shoot with modern sensibilities.”

Indeed, Lane and Wagner and the brides the pamper aren’t the only ones who think that the pin-up photos produced at Old School Pin-Ups are the perfect groom’s gift. The editors of Seattle Bride Magazine voted Old School Pin-Ups best groom’s gift in 2008, and Seattle PI’s Monica Guzman ranked the pin-up studio as one of the five coolest booths at the 2010 Seattle Wedding Show, no doubt due to testimonials by former clients who volunteered their time to tell Seattle’s brides how much fun they had at their Old School Pin-Ups shoot.

For the women who’ve posed with Lane and Wagner, it’s not just about producing an amazing gift for their husbands-to-be, but about discovering their own timeless inner beauty. Lane enjoys seeing her clients react to how mid-century makeup and hair helps highlight their natural beauty, playing up their best features to give them power and confidence. “We like to show her how beautiful she can be and how beautiful others see her as well,” Wagner said.

Lane and Wagner’s commitment to making women feel beautiful and confident extends beyond pin-ups; they are currently working on a beauty book that will help women achieve the retro glamour they get from Old School Pin-Ups in their own homes with modern styling tools. “It’s such a thrill for Lance and I to turn women onto themselves and say, ‘Look at yourself. You’re amazing,” Lane said.

Because Old School Pin-Ups is located in a community of live/work spaces, they only accept bookings through their website. Visit www.oldschoolpinups.com for more information.
